I'm trying to learn about the registry, understand how it works, etc ... But as you can guess the only way I can learn by messin' about, I've alrready learned how to stop users changing the wallpaper, and couple of other stuff. I just want people to give me a few tips on what else I can do, and what to stay away from! These are steps I take to make sure I don't mess things up ... - I read alot of things on the internet (obviously all different sites to make sure I don't get false information - Backup my registry incase I mess things up ... I understand what i'm messin' about with can fĂșck up my computer, and I also understand that registry is really for keeping information. But I also found out that I can change certain programs settings (like there default folders, I think I can change Basic4GL default folder, but not sure if the thing i'm looking at is correct ...). Anyways, - Nicky!

I don't know about XP, but back in the 98 days we couldn't easily modify system icons (stuff like folders), only icons for files and shortcuts. There were only two options: modify shell32.dll or find the registry entries that told Windows where the icons were. So what I did was set up my own icon library, then change the registry to point to the positions inside that. Then whenever I wanted to change icons I could either modify the icon library or just swap it out for a different one. This also had icons for stuff like My Computer, IE, CD, network shares, help, shutdown, and other stuff I don't remember. Some of them could be modified in other ways (My Computer) but some couldn't (folders, some of the icons that appear in those dialog-box things).
You can also change where important folders are stored. Such as the desktop. Handy if you want to store the desktop folder on a different harddrive. That's another thing I did, because the drive Windows was installed on was so small.
You can also change a lot of the tool-tips and descriptions, get rid of bogus entries in "add/remove programs", change the settings after moving an installed program without having to uninstall-reinstall if it was in the wrong place, and a bunch of other stuff.

Thanks! there some nice ideas. Heres an idea -
The start menu has a delay of 400 mill seconds, switch it to 0.
Mhm can someone give me away round this?
Here it goes - I switch the start folder in the registry for Basic4GL but whenever I do that and I use Basic4GL a couple of times (like load it up) it switches back! anyone got a solution to stop that?
- Nicky

Resource Hacker: Lets you open most windows .EXE's and extract icons\whatevers inside, and edit them, and resave the .exe. The Elder Geek: A great site which will give you good (if not 100% accurate) information! The Elder Geek VISTA: I guess its caus he loves Vista soooooo much Thats all that springs to mind now.. happy editin! -Harry
