Imagine this: You're having a computer problem. You've tried everything you can to fix it, but your computer is still broken.
You're frustrated because you just want the thing to work, and you're also frustrated because you can't fix it.
You bring it over to your local computer repair store and ask them "Hey can you fix my computer?" They plug it in, and look at the problem, and say "Oh, yeah, this is a really easy problem to fix."
Then they unplug it and hand it back to you. The computer guy then says:
"Maybe you should spend less time bringing your computer here and more time at your local library. I am a 100% self-taught computer technician, and if I can do it, there's no reason you can't. You don't see me asking for help, do you? Have fun learning!"
Now you're frustrated on four levels. You're frustrated that the guy knows the problem, but he refuses to fix it because it is "beneath him", and that there are no sources of help readily available to you.
This is an illustration of my experience with the users on this board.
When I scroll through the lost pages of this board, I find better times.
I mean look at that! Now THAT is how a help board should work.
I realize that attendance has gone down to, what, 7 people a day?
But at least one person who knows what they're doing can still help.
I'm not asking you to write my code for me, I'm not asking you to "just fix it", I'm asking you to help me. I'm on a help board asking for help, and I'm getting replies like "I've already helped you once, go do it yourself" from one certain user and "This problem is easily fixed, but I'm not going to help you" from another.
You have NO right to tell people how they learn. Some people can be self-taught from a library of commands, but others prefer the human touch. That's just the way the world works.
Learning other languages before coming here is NOT a requirement. Do you see that up on a sticky somewhere? Did Tom ever say this?
This is my first language, and I want help. That's all. I'm frustrated on four levels, and I have no hope.
If you don't want to give me the answers, you don't have to. Just at least point me in the right direction. Just at least give me a HINT at what I'm doing wrong. Just help me in any way possible. Don't ignore me, don't criticize me, just help me.
This is, after all, a HELP board, right? If you aren't going to be doing any HELPING, then maybe you should just stay out of the section?
This does not apply to the people it does not apply to. It applies to only two people.
