Does anybody know of any places that have free music that can be used for anything (publicly distributed) without violating copyright laws, patents, etc. Looking for some classical music, but in the future I may need other genre's. Yesterday I spent some time looking around and every place wanted some $$...
The music should be able to be used for more than just programs.
Please post, Thank you

Well I was really just looking for a website for classical music, but if you could make something that's similar to classical that would be nice. To be specific I'd like something soft sounding, not very distracting to the ear, basically just background music. I'm using it for the chess game. (but in the future I may need other songs for other stuff which is why I asked for a website) It needs to be something that would kind of fit in with everybody's tastes. (young, middle aged, old) The reason that I think classical would work out is because nobody really seems to just hate it with their guts, it's just there. Something that suggests quiet concentration, plotting.(fits chess like theme) Maybe I'm a little too demanding on the music. Are you able to make something like that? Have you ever seen the short movie Sintel on Youtube?(It was made using Blender 2.5) At the very end when their rolling the credits they have some music that would also work, but that's their music. (copyrighted) www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRsGyueVLvQLord of the Rings also has some in it that wouldn't sound too bad. (really quiet in the background, but definitely sets the contributes to some of the plot) Truthfully what I'd like is a website with tons of music on it that is both free, and released to the public for any use.

"I'll cook something up tommorow or so."-aphoticgenesis That would be great. If you do make something for the chess game, then I'll put your name in the credits. If I search for "royalty free music no charge no cost" i get thausend of sites. Thanks for the sites. I haven't found anything yet that i'll use, however that doesn't mean anything. Even if the sites you found don't work out, they may help out later when (others/myself) are seeking music

2 thinks if i play chess
1. i will hear my own collection of music 2. i need silent
Your chess player can use *.wav *.ogg *.mp3 with the FreeSound plugin.
let me know if i can test your self made chess game please
i'm not a good chess player but good to see if you have a problem in your chess source code.

Then if the player(s) don't like the music they can change it to whatever they like (or turn it off entirely). Also anybody can test the self made chess game, however it's not done yet. I'm thinking that it will be done some time in August (but that's just a guess). The reason it's taking so long is that I'm re-making the 3d display for the game.(which is a .obj loader that is really flexible) The thing that needs the most work so far is the actual brains for the chess game. So far it can: make sure that you don't move the other player's pieces, make sure that you don't try to move a nonexistent piece, and make sure that you're not trying to attack your own pieces. I'm having some difficulty with it realizing which directions pieces are supposed to go. However i haven't put as much work into that aspect of the game yet. (even though it's one of the most important) aphoticgenesis it'll be a while before I get a chance to listen to the music you made, but thanks in advance.

Have you ever thought about making your own music? It might be an interesting learning experience. There's lots of free software available for making music such as MODPlug, MadTracker & MilkyTracker.

Good idea, but he will probably be to worried about programming the game than making the music. I tried both once, it wares you out fast. lol

Same story here with trying to do the art and incorporating it into a game at the same time. Definitely look into getting someone to do a specific task (such as sound or art) if you plan on doing anything significant. If not, break up the tasks.
