Binary Space Partition. Instead of using lots of triangles to build a level (halo, half-Life, Quake3) you can use a small amount of geometric primitives (cubes, pyramids....) . Doom and Quake use bsp's, that why quake 1 is only like 50 megs. about a meg is the exe, five megs for enemy nimations and model, 4 megs for bsp's, and the rest is all textures. The other advantage is you can set them up so that the renderer checks which bsp's are visible, and it won't even allocate video memory for the ones that are not.
