I think open source is the way to go if you ever intend to see a LINUX version! of 4GL. Basic 4GL would be the dogs bollocks on LINUX as there are very few decent BASIC interpreters on linux. Plus open source would enable the community to add more recent open GL compatability.

go for it. it would increase the user base and with their contributions, basic4gl will absolutly rock.

Why is this topic still a sticky? Isn't it already open-source?

no open source is when people can edit all versions of the program.
you can only edit v2.3.3 (as of september )

Well, it would attract more people (Geeks who are constantly examining source for viruses) but you might have different variations and 'knockoffs' being passed around. Dunno man, up to you.

i think its a awsome idea, but some one might just steal it and make it its own.... i think the moderators should only be able to see it and add on to it.

You can't steal open-source. The whole point is that anybody can take an idea and run with it. With the right licensing you can prevent the moral people from doing it, but then you're pretty much defeating the purpose.

I don't know about the open source bit. I definitely don't want to see it go commercial I do understand the desire, though, tom. I have my own projects that I would like to see advance, but do not have the time to continue. I recommend that you go open source, but not on sourceforge. Keep it here and turn it into more of a group project so you can supervise and our suggestions on the forums don't go unheard. If someone wants to work on b4gl, let them come to our little community and join us. We are Basic4GL. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

I think we should keep it in house just have the members work on it for the general public. And can you add some decent documentation for useing the source for basic4gl if yu have time?

I think it would be a good idea to open source it. The community could help to expand and make it even better then it is now.
